Update to the Thor’s Hammer Formula
I found the missing ingredient.

(Please read my article on Thor’s Hammers here first, if you haven’t already, for this to make sense. Then read on for this recent expansion on my thesis. And, you know, skip it if it’s too deep or weird for you.)
In looking at my own chart, and thinking about a Thor’s Hammer configuration I have there, it occurred to me that my formula for successfully elevating the conscious expression of the apex planet is not merely to focus on its highest expression and energetically will it to be so.
The key is to turn the whole configuration around, so the apex planet is no longer the depository of the angst delivered by the two squaring planets that are sesquisquaring the apex planet and turning it into a lightning-fueled weapon of mass destruction, aka Mjolnir —
It is to consciously choose to transmute the energies of the apex planet
as being in the driver’s seat of a chariot, and the two sesquisquaring planets as a yoked pair of horses (or in Thor’s case, goats) that can be called upon to do the driver’s will.

So, the missing piece is to utilize the other two planetary energies to make the work of the apex planet easier - it becomes a yoke then instead of a hammer. And Thor is stronger, empowered, and in charge of himself and his destiny because of it.
This may sound relatively easy in theory, but the practice of it requires both awareness and the conscious choice to mentally flip the triggering situation in an empowering way. Some configurations, like I illustrated in the Compulsively Repulsive article, are so malignant that it would take an inordinate amount of willpower and trigger resistance (not to mention the awareness of it in the first place) to prevent ugly, even terrible things from occurring both to the native and to others in their path.
In most cases, however, becoming aware of the aspect pattern causing the triggered, reactive behavior (the Thor’s Hammer in one’s chart) and practicing the empowering perspective flip from reactive hammer to proactive chariot can rewrite someone’s entire problematic behavior patterns.
This is magic in motion — desire + will = manifestation — it only requires the conscious decision to flip it and turn it on, to shift the energy from reactive to proactive.

It is the decision to shift perspectives from a disempowered, unconscious, reactive mindset to one that is consciously willing to utilize the energies involved (the two squaring planets) in a way that will get you what you want and take you where you want to go, which is the highest expression of the apex planet.
Example
I will use my own Thor’s Hammer as an example to illustrate the process.
My Eros in Capricorn (1st house) is square my Uranus in Libra (10th house), and both are sesquisquare my Saturn in Taurus (5th house - all Placidus house system by the way).
The Previous Formula from Compulsively Repulsive:
Theme: The inner conflict or tension (square) between my (negative behavior tendency of planet 1, including sign and house) and my (negative behavior tendency of planet 2, including sign and house) leads me to act out repeatedly in (negative behavior tendency of apex planet, including sign and house) ways.
Solution: The most direct solution to this inner conflict is to use (the highest energetic expression of the apex planet, including sign and house) productively and consciously.
The New and Improved Formula (with my planets plugged into the equation):
Note: By nature, Thor’s Hammers incite the more negative qualities of the planets by the very nature of the challenging aspects involved; you will see below these negative qualities described and not the higher expression of these planets. This is intentional in order to illustrate both the challenge and the solution.
New Theme: The inner conflict or tension (square) between my (Eros in Capricorn, 1st house) strong reluctance to take risks in both love and creative pursuits coupled with a determined ambition to be an authority on both practical and creative matters, and my (Uranus in Libra, 10th house) defiantly independent, rebellious, avoidant, resistant, and erratic nature when it comes to working with others, leads me to act out repeatedly in (Saturn retrograde in Taurus, 5th house) boundary-less, unstructured, ungrounded (because of the retrograde), too serious, defensive, uptight, rule-fixated, controlling, and stubborn ways.
New Solution: The most direct solution to this inner conflict is to use the highest energetic expression of Saturn in Taurus in the 5th, consciously harnessing and utilizing the positive energies of Eros and Uranus to do so in a proactive, productive manner. This looks like: harnessing my desire and drive for depth and substance to focus on long-term goals (Eros in Capricorn in 1st), to creatively collaborate with others on projects that inspire, beautify, clarify, or promote justice (Uranus in Libra in 10th), while diplomatically positioning myself as a self-directed, self-contained creator of my own artistic pursuits and pleasures (Saturn in Taurus in the 5th).
This will require me to creatively structure my time, set limits for myself to enhance my productivity, set micro goals and meet them periodically, to take balanced time out for myself to meditate, reflect, and process, to reassess my abilities, desires, drives, interests, and motivation on a regular basis, to apply (and constantly re-tune and realign) my created structures so that I can effectively produce creative and/or collaborative work, while competing with only my past self instead of others. It means controlling myself instead of others, and creating a framework in which I can successfully, and comfortably, do so.
Bonus: Saturn is the ruler of Eros in Capricorn, so learning to "do Saturn" in a healthy and productive way that is beneficial for my own life will help me "work well" with others (Uranus in Libra in 10th). And Venus ruling both Taurus and Libra lends its own graces to help smooth over any rough edges in the process.
